We are excited to support our client, HistoryMiami Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate located in the heart of downtown Miami, with promotion around their Art Basel lineup, including the 10th Annual Miami Street Photography Festival.
The two-day event starting today will capture photography lovers’ hearts during Miami Art Week 2022 by hosting one of the most popular art photography events in town. The festival features world-class photographers from more than 50 countries, exhibitions, lectures, and workshops with a mission to give exposure to up-and-coming photographers from around the globe and highlight the best in international street photography.
Legendary photographers, including Ukrainian-born Dina Litovsky, will headline the festival with master talks Friday and Saturday evenings. Dina is a social documentarian whose portraits depict the essence of culture, sub-culture, gender issues, and rights of passages. Her editorial work is often found in grand publications like National Geographic and The New York Times. The M Network caught up with Dina on her arrival in Miami for the festival.
When Litovsky was eleven years old, her family immigrated to the United States from Ukraine. Growing up, her family had hopes that Dina would be a doctor, so she went to NYU and received her Psychology degree, but upon graduating, she realized her true love was in capturing moments. At 23 years old, she picked up her first camera.
When we asked Dina what she wanted people to take away from her photography, Dina said, “I don’t want to give any answers. I photograph things I am curious about and try to bring a sense of whimsy and a bit of the surreal – it is just asking questions and being curious about contemporary culture.”
Litovsky continued, “I like layers…I love to layer my pictures, and I love to look where people are looking, so usually my camera follows the gazes, and I really focus on that- grabbing the gaze of interaction and social interactions.”
Her art directly depicts her truth; her psychology degree plays right into her photography as she probes people to look at their role in society and question the culture as a whole. “I think I photograph everything that I learned in psychology. All of the social psychology, rude behavior, social interaction; I base… [my images]…on my studies, so it didn’t go to waste; I believe that is the foundation of all of my work, for sure.”
Dina’s three-day, night photography workshop, will be an intense experience, where she will teach the ins and outs of night photography. Simultaneously, sharing some of her secrets by compressing what she has learned along the way into an experiential photography tour, taking the images, and transforming the moment into a group learning discussion. The workshop may be sold out, but you can keep up with Dina here.
Guests to the Festival will also have the opportunity to explore other exhibits on display at HistoryMiami Museum: CAPTURE: A Portrait of the Pandemic, Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow, and Traversing the Wilderness: Exploring Human Transportation Across the Everglades.
